The question I get asked most often by clients is “What colors should I paint my home?” And finding the perfect hues for my clients is not for the faint of heart. I know that a large part of my client’s joy and happiness in their homes is contingent on what they see when they pull into their driveways and when they’re enjoying time with their families and friends indoors.

The following are some of my tips for selecting the BEST exterior paint for your home. And if you just want to know the EXACT paint colors I specify, click here, and you can have exclusive access to them too!

First, the color of your home should be inextricably linked to the style of the home. For example, if it’s a Spanish or Mediterranean style home, you may want to mirror the colors traditionally used in those regions. In warmer areas (like Spain and Greece) white is a popular exterior color because it reflects light, rather than absorbing it as darker colors do.

If you have an older, more historical home and/or are located on the East Coast, you may want to go with a more traditional exterior palette that might include more complex reds/rusts, blues, or sophisticated greens. Even black hues can work well with a traditional home.

For more modern contemporary homes, the sky is the limit in terms of what you can do with color. Because modern/contemporary architecture tends toward minimal, rectilinear lines, the use of bright, unexpected colors and contrast is a great way to add interest to what might otherwise come across as a repetitive or even bland exterior. My favorite color to pair with otherwise cool-looking concrete and greys is orange. Orange is the warmest color on the color wheel and can add a much-needed ray of sunshine to a space that feels too “cold” or bare visually.

However, my absolute FAVORITE exterior paint colors are the following neutrals: white, black, taupe (a warm or French Grey sometimes referred to as “griege”), light grey, dark grey, and sage green.

Designer Tip: And don’ forget to TEST your paint colors in large swatches where you plan to use them. Never, ever paint a color you haven’t tested first!
