Plants don’t just liven up a space visually, they also cleanse and purify the air, making them must-haves for any well-loved home. For some reason, ever since the new year, I’ve been craving more greenery in my space, and so far I’ve added a fresh orchid in my office and some succulents at home, but I’m dying for even more houseplants to liven up my interiors. So I did some research to help me find just the right houseplant. Here are some things you need to know about greenery in interiors.
The color green symbolizes vitality, growth, and new beginnings. What’s more, plants ease stress and anxiety, making it easier to breathe -- literally and figuratively.
Basil, for instance, contains linalool, an anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory compound that has a calming effect on the body and mind. Not only does basil reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, it also emits oxygen for 20 hours a day! It's like having your own Vegas-style oxygen bar inside your home!
Another powerful air purifier is the Boston Fern, which removes up to 1863 toxins per hour. With its lush green foliage, the Boston Fern is thought to be one of the best air-purifying houseplants. This evergreen plant not only rids interiors of harmful toxins, it’s also a natural humidifier, restoring moisture to the air naturally. Because of these air-purifying properties, the Boston Fern may offer health benefits to dry-skin sufferers (like me!) or those susceptible to dry noses or throats. Not to mention, they look super chic when hung from macrame pot holders.
Aloe Vera is another excellent air-purifying plant. I have to be honest, I love succulents, not just for their stylish modern minimalism, but because they are practically maintenance free. For someone without a green thumb, like me, succulents are a must-have for home or office. This particular plant purifies the air of formaldehyde and benzene, two chemicals commonly found in household cleaning products.
